'I go to find the Sun!'

Legolas was one of my favourites from the time I first read LOTR, yet I've never drawn him till now. Orlando Bloom so messed up my original idea of him that I had almost forgotten what the Book!Legolas I loved so much was like - light-hearted and jaunty. Finding this fantastic essay online helped so much!
Then came the problem of the colour of his hair. Once upon a time I thought of him as dark-haired like most other elves... but... Tolkien did write that daddy Thranduil was golden-haired in The Hobbit, after all... and after the movies it is so hard for me to imagine him with dark hair.

So here is Book!Legolas with silver-gold hair since Thranduil had golden hair (which I will forever see as a mistake by Tolkien since only the Vanyar are golden-haired), but then Thingol had silver hair, and Legolas is a half-Sinda, so this silver-gold is a kind of compromise...

And one of my favourite moments, with Legolas at his most playful and sassy:

“Legolas watched them for awhile with a smile upon his lips, and then he turned to the others. 'The strongest must seek a way, say you? But I say: let a ploughman plough, but choose an otter for swimming, and for running light over grass and leaf, or over snow--an Elf.'

With that he sprang forth nimbly, and then Frodo noticed as if for the first time, though he had long known it, that the Elf had no boots, but wore only light shoes, as he always did, and his feet made little imprint in the snow.

'Farewell!' he said to Gandalf. 'I go to find the Sun!' Then swift as a runner over firm sand he shot away, and quickly overtaking the toiling men, with a wave of his hand he passed them, and sped into the distance, and vanished round the rocky turn.”

i really like this version a bunch there was a lot to be desired left out with Blooms Legolas though I think he did the best with what he had to work with. Also another thing I think could have been portrayed better was the great friendship that was between Legolas and Gimli. I love gimli from the movies but Jackson had him portrayed as the comic relief for the film and you didn’t get a chance to see how deep a character he really was. One of the only Dwarf’s to be considered Elf-friend and favored by Galadriel herself for his humble request for the lock of hair. Which she instead gave three.

Most do not really realize the significants of that one act cause Feanor was going to weave each lock into the three Silmarils Feanor tried the same thing but Galadriel refused him because of the darkness she saw in him. Also as the Appendix say it was believed that gimli left with Legolas to the Undying Lands and he was the only dwarf to be awarded that honor.

you should paint those two things Legolas and gimli’s friendship and them leaving on the ship together
